EVERY GSD IS A "POTENTIAL JRD CARRIER" UNLESS TESTED "JRD CLEAR"

It is well to remember the lines of the philosopher Hippocrates in 360 BC, when he said “There are in fact two things:- science and opinion. The former begets knowledge, the latter ignorance.” Evidence-based science is, where possible, on what judgements should be made.

Readers will note from the pedigrees below of "JRD carriers, that Sieger Uran vom Wildsteiger Land is a common ancestor. Int. Ch. Rosehurst Chris is also implicated.

The JRD CARRIERS already identified clearly indicate the following GSD should be JRD DNA tested - Corjon Mark, his mother Bygoly Miss Moneypenny at Corjon, her litter brothers & sisters, and ALL offspring from Corjon Mark, including the Aufraumen 'C' litter. The Corjon 'P' litter (repeat mating of the Corjon Mark 'M' litter).

IMPORTANT NOTE
I am informed by the owners of Corjon Mark that he was withdrawn from stud earlier this year - his last stud was November 2007 to Nikonis Bria - this mating produced the Nikonis 'A' litter, referred to below.

The sire & dam of Bygoly Miss Moneypenny at Corjon is Esko vom Danischen Hof & Wereunas Breeze if both or either of these GSD appear in your GSD's pedigree it may be useful to test them. If Bygoly Miss Moneypenny is found to be a carrier, this would point to the need to test the rest of her siblings (9) and the repeat mating (8) - and their offspring. From this you can see the value to our breed of publishing the "JRD CARRIERS"

Note: There are other kidney diseases and reasons for kidney (renal) failure in dogs. Hopefully a DNA test will be found for some of the other kidney hereditary diseases.

What does this JRD DNA test actually tell the breeder?

The DNA test results are reported as follows:

a) Carrier (one copy of the JRD mutation)

b) Homozygous mutant allele = Homozygote Carrier (two copies of the JRD mutation)

c) Clear.

With a & b results above – the dog is also potentially affected by JRD.

This DNA test information is clearly important for breeders, and important for the future of the breed. Carriers of this mutation bred to a clear, approximately 50% of the offspring will be clear of the mutation. Individuals with two copies of the gene homozygote carriers bred to a clear will produce all carriers.

Note: all genes are in pairs - 1 from the mother & 1 from the father
In a homozygote carrier both are mutated (JRD) this clearly indicates that a homozygote carrier received 1 from its mother & 1 from its father - you will now hopefully understand why Corjon Mark will be a JRD carrier. You will also note that the Father of Corjon Mark, CH. Phillip is CLEAR, so therefore Corjon Mark must of obtained his JRD mutation gene from his mother, Bygoly Miss Moneypenny at Corjon.
